Couples Counseling

Couples Therapy

Couples counseling is an approach to therapy that primarily focuses on improving a relational dynamic. The primary goal of couples counseling is to help partners understand the underlying emotional needs of each member of the relationship and to improve communication processes around these needs.  Dr. Dupuis provides couples counseling through both a virtual modality and in person from her East Lansing, MI office.

Defining the Potential Benefits of Couples Counseling

The goal of couple’s counseling is to help partners strengthen and enhance their relationship.

Couples counseling creates a safe space towards building a foundation for transparent communication, which is a vital component of a healthy relationship. Ultimately, the objective is to provide a deeper understanding of each partner's needs, values, and emotions.

Some benefits include:

  • Better Problem-Solving Skills/Improved Communication Abilities

• Couples learn ways to access their feelings and emotions, which is vital for conflict resolution and emotional attunement.
• Couples counseling provides effective problem-solving techniques that are valuable in all facets of life.

  • Identify and Modify Unhealthy Behavioral Patterns and Cycles

• Couples learn how to recognize and alter patterns, which can help to prevent unresolved conflicts from reoccurring – often without notice.

  • Rebuild Trust and Intimacy

• In couples counseling, each partner rediscovers components of what drew them together.
• Couples learn how to have emotionally vulnerable and transparent dialogues, which help them re-establish a sense of trust.

  • Provides Support During Challenging Times

Every couple faces life transitions – a loss, a new job, a new baby, etc. These times can be emotionally challenging and complex and ultimately impact the well-being of the relationship. With counseling, each partner learns how to better manage and cope with shifts and changes that impact both the individual and the couple.
